'The Strange Case of Mortimer Fenley' is a mystery novel written by Louis Tracy. The story follows Scotland Yard's most expert crime-solvers, Superintendent Winter and Detective Inspector Furneau, as they embark on a journey to unravel the enigmatic murder of a wealthy banker. With their contrasting styles and personalities, the big, bluff and very British Winter and the small, agile and charming Furneau of French descent, make a formidable team. Their witty banter and playful bickering only add to the entertainment as they delve deeper into the case. But the crime is far from simple. A shot rings out on the doorstep of an Elizabethan mansion, and Mortimer Fenley, the wealthy banker, falls to the ground, dead. The young painter who was sketching on the estate swears the shot came from the woods nearby, but the killer and weapon cannot be found. Fenley's sons, both under-bred and disagreeable, stand to benefit from his death, but one was in London and the other inside the house at the time of the shooting. Amidst this web of lies and deceit, Fenley's young and beautiful ward becomes the target of their affections. Will she become their victim or will she outsmart them?
