Francis Hopkinson Smith, the architect who built the foundation for the American Statue of Liberty, was also a writer of many books, as well as a recipient of various awards for his paintings. "Fiddles" is a tale set in a German village about the exploits of a young man so nicknamed. Wilhelm Feudels-Shimmer, or Fiddles, is accused of poaching wild game and is about to be sentenced when the Judge takes pity on him. But his legal troubles are not yet over. When the man who accused him of the crime, a cobbler, turns up knocked unconscious, he points the finger at Fiddles for his attack. Not even his alibi that he had been to lunch at the home of a Baroness seems to be convincing enough to the police…
