Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The following Essay, or the substance of it, was delivered by appointment in Edinburgh, at the first session of the First General Presbyterian Council, on the Fourth of July, 1877, and led to an action which will direct wide attention to the question of creeds, and bring it before the next General Council, to be held in Philadelphia in 1880. It has been published in England and Scotland, and is now re-published in America, together with the resolutions of the Council thereon, in the hope that it may help to prepare the way for a wise solution of an important and difficult problem of the Reformed Churches.
