Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. It is not our purpose to give the families complete in all their branches (as that would be impossible), but such parts of them as have been collected and traced out. In tracing the line of ancestry, records have been the authority principally; and if errors occur where tradition has been relied upon, we leave them to be corrected by those who may follow us with a revised and enlarged edition. In compiling this volume we have ever regarded the scrupulousness manifested by the late George Haines, M. D., in collecting the matter herein contained, as well as that of his nephew, the late George Haines, who so ably assisted him. In introducing this volume to the public, where it must come before the eye of the critic, we have no apology to offer; feeling that we have simply done that which was required at our hands in memory of him who in departing leaves a void which time alone can efface.
