Beschreibung

The book sets out a distinctive position on media regulation, contrary to the more common assumption that we live in an age of convergence where distinctions between media are relics that will soon be abandoned. ii) The 'Toronto School' work drawn upon is fairly well known within media studies, but hardly ever used in law and regulation. (This also means, by the way, that the book may have special appeal in Canada).iii) Although it is a book about media law, its scope is broader in order to tell a compelling story - for instance, chapter 2 involves discussion of 19th century religious arguments and other issues around flags, protests, and free speech; chapter 8 on entertainment covers music, dance, circuses, etc.iv) Many of the issues discussed are still topical e.g. how should different types of content be regulated, especially when delivered through the Internet? v) The sectors discussed are also topical in that the emergent business models are well known eg Netflix, Spotify, smartphone apps.
