HIGH SEAS - long accountThe reason I enjoyed my time on freighters is because I had to write up certain projects I had done and I wanted to read a good number of novels. My first was across the Pacific Ocean on the President Polk. The ship stopped at Okinawa, Jakarta, Singapore, Manila, and Hong Kong. The passengers had 10 days ashore at Singapore and I visited to Malaysia. The second one was on the Thompson Lykes down the West Coast of South America. After a stop in Cartegena, the ship passed through the Panama Canal to Panama City. The cities we docked at were Guayaquil, Buenaventura, Callao-Lima, and Valparaiso. I left the ship between Peru and Chile and took a side trip to Urubamba and Macchu Picchu and flew to Arequipa. The third was on the Santa Fe down the East Coast of South America. This ship left from Houston and docked at more cities than usual and among them were Vera Cruz, Tampico, San Juan twice, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janiero twice. At the later city the Carnival was on and it was fabulous. The fourth was on the Amazing Grace, which supplies the provi-sions for the Tall Ships in the Caribbean. We stopped at one set of islands on the way down and another on the way back. The fifth was on the Olivebank which left from Freeport. After 15 days she stopped at Abijan, Tema, and Lagos on the West Coast of Africa. After Capetown and Port Elizabeth the main cargo unload was in Durban. I took the opportunity to visit the Christian Bro-thers in Johannesburg and to participate in a tour of Kruger National Park. The last was on the Aranui II, which toured the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific. The islands are very beautiful and the people, somewhat untouched by the modern world, very friendly.
