At only twelve years old, Paula found herself planted on her front porch staring at a final eviction notice after her single mother had been laid off from her minimum wage job that had been barely sustaining the family for years. It wasn't the first time Paula had ever seen an eviction notice taped to her door, but it was the first time she knew that her family had nowhere else to go and no chance at starting over again. Just weeks after that final eviction was posted, Paula, her brother, and her mother became a statistic. They were suddenly three more heads to lump in with the 600,000 individuals suffering from homelessness.
For the next months, Paula lived her life week by week, bouncing from one church basement to the next. She listened to her mother's sobs while she lay awake on her cot, praying that God would do something to save her family from the instability and stigmatization that being homeless brought with it. Paula pleaded and prayed and began to lose hope. But just when she thought God must have been turning a deaf ear to her prayers, God showed up in a way no one could have ever imagined.
