They stood on the rim, on the edge of sheer cliffs. Stretched beneath them was a huge, flat, ten kilometre wide, sea of sand which perfectly describes this windswept and slowly undulating caldera. Truly the sand was like an inland sea with gently rippling waves. Four classically cone shaped peaks rise from the centre of this sandy ocean, like desert islands. Three of them are green and lush with vegetation, but the fourth is a silhouette, bare and grey from the ash and cinder thrown out from its smoking crater which permanently thunders and grumbles. This is one of the most magnificent natural sights in the world; vast, barren and prehistoric. This lunar landscape is powerful; mesmerising; dramatic; mind numbing and totally overwhelming. They stood in silence, humbled by the sheer beauty and magnitude and power of nature. In its rawness and grandeur it is a picture to inspire the imagination of any savage breast. Cold shivers ran down their spines and they could only gawp and stare at this monumental proof of the superiority of God and Nature over Man.
