About the Book: On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the 'Quit India Movement' i.e. on 9th August 1992, Shri Ganesh Shukla, Journalist and Freedom Fighter, started a column 'An Augusteer's Reminiscences', in the New Wave, New Delhi, the journal of which he was Founder Editor. The series of articles that have now been compiled into this book, was published between 1992 to 1995. Shri Ganesh Shukla gives a graphic account of his experiences and interactions with many of the players and heroes, both renowned and un-sung, of the struggle for India's Independence and the early years of the new Nation, the tumultuous period between 1945 to 1964. The Reminiscences were written from memory and from Shri Shukla's conversations with former colleagues and Comrades.About the Author:Shri Ganesh Shukla (1924-2005): A Biographical NoteA Student Activist, Freedom Fighter, Trade Unionist, Communist, Journalist and close associate of Shri P.C. Joshi, Shri Ganesh Shukla was born on 24 January 1924 in District Sant Kabir Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, and graduated from Ewing Christian College, Allahabad. As a student activist he participated in the Quit India movement along with Shri H.N. Bahuguna, who later became the Chief Minister of the UP (the United Provinces) and was arrested but released on the intervention of the Principal of his college. He went underground for four months during the Quit India movement. Later, he joined DAV College, Kanpur and took part in student and trade union movements.Shri Shukla became a Card Holder of the Communist Party of India after giving up his studies in 1945. He stayed at PHQ (Party Head Quarters), Bombay (Mumbai), for a year and took up a journalistic career as a Reporter in Naya Savera, a mouthpiece of the Communist Party of India. He was a Reporter and civilian activist during the Royal Indian Naval Mutiny (1946). After leaving the CPI, PHQ, he became the Joint Secretary of Leather Workers' Union, Kanpur, and Secretary of the District Committee, CPI, Basti, UP (1951-57).He was a Special Correspondent for Link and Patriot (1958-71) and a War Correspondent during "e;Operation Vijay"e;, the March of the Indian Army into Goa (1962).He was the Founder-Editor of the Weekly, New Wave (1971-99), a Left of Centre organ. He was also a member of various prestigious committees such as the FSU (Friends of the Soviet Union) and the Economic Advisory Committee to former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi.
