During the American Revolutionary War, George Washington relied on intelligence given by the American espionage network known as the Culper Spy Ring. George Washington appointed Major Benjamin Tallmadge chief of military intelligence in November 1778. His mission was to establish a spy network in New York City, the location of the British headquarters. The Culper Spy Ring was active in and around New York City for five years, during which time no member of the network was ever exposed.
