In May 1864, Fanny Kelly and her family joined a wagon train of pioneers heading west. Many of the men and women who had set out from Kansas would never reach their destination. The ill-fated party was attacked by Chief Ottawa and a Sioux raiding band on the Oregon Trail. Kelly was seized by the marauding Indians and held prisoner for five months. Her memoir vividly describes the attack and her later life among her captors, as she was forced to adapt to their customs and lifestyle.
