"The Catskills" by Thomas Morris Longstreth

In this enchanting 2024 republication of the timeless classic "The Catskills," journey alongside Thomas Morris Longstreth as he explores the captivating landscapes of the Catskill Mountains. Originally published in 1918, this travelogue remains a cherished ode to nature's grandeur and the rugged beauty of upstate New York.

Author's Biography: Thomas Morris Longstreth was born on February 17, 1886, amidst a blizzard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He hailed from a Quaker family, with parents Benjamin Taylor Longstreth and Frances Haldeman. Longstreth's literary pursuits began early, and his passion for travel and exploration led him to pen over forty books, including captivating travelogues on both The Adirondacks and The Catskills.

During his multifaceted career, Longstreth wore various hats: an English teacher at the Blight Preparatory School in Philadelphia, a camp director at Camp Megunticook in Camden, Maine, and a teacher at the De Lancey School in Philadelphia. His wanderlust took him to the Catskill Mountains in 1918, where he meticulously documented his adventures, weaving vivid descriptions of Overlook Mountain, Stony Clove, Phoenicia, Hunter, Slide Mountain, Kaaterskill Falls, the Ashokan Reservoir, and Mount Utsayantha.

Longstreth's legacy extends beyond his literary works. His late juvenile tale, "Time Flight" (1954), transported contemporary young men into seventeenth-century Salem during the witch trials, a thrilling adventure that resonates with readers even today.

Sadly, Thomas Morris Longstreth departed this world on December 21, 1975, leaving behind a rich literary heritage that continues to inspire generations of nature enthusiasts and wanderers.

Note: The 2024 republication of "The Catskills" is a celebration of Longstreth's enduring legacy, inviting readers to rediscover the magic of these majestic mountains.
