Taoist theory for inner elixir is the core of Taoist theories and practical methods since late Tang Dynasty. The inner elixir theory has experienced a long history from its formation to maturity. Research on historical origin of the inner elixir theory may help us understand its historical significance and true face, with important values for study on the history of Taoism. Currently, there are quite a lot of different opinions about the origin and development of the inner elixir theory in the academic world, but most of them are superficial and not based on a systematic or in-depth research. Therefore, no historical description to the origin and development of the inner elixir theory is available and many issues are still in exploration.
