"Descent into Hell" is a thriller novel by theologian and author Charles Walter Williams. On a hill outside London, the resident poet, Peter Stanhope, has set up a stage where he stages his plays. It is there that he meets Pauline Anstruther, the heroine of the novel, a woman who lives in fear of meeting her own doppelgänger, which has appeared to her throughout her life. Stanhope, in a manner reminiscent of Christ-like behavior offers to take on her fears upon himself, an offer she takes up, resulting in a surge of hope in her life. But meanwhile, Lawrence Wentworth, a local historian, faces the rejection of his muse Adela Hunt and instead begins to fall in love with a spirit form of her. The spirit causes him to become more and more withdrawn and eventually leads him to a dark pit where Wentworth begins his descent to hell…
