The army was widely believed to be a key factor and rumors were rife that it had orders from above to obstruct the elections by all means possible. For years Nigeria had been known as one of the most corrupt countries not only in Africa but in the world. That worked both ways. In their favor was the citizens’ awareness of the wide-spread bribery that robbed them of oil revenues that should have been theirs; but against them was the fear that voters would be intimidated into voting against. Several hundred of us crowded in. Nearly every one there knew at least one volunteer who was actually on the ground in Nigeria assisting in the election drive. Needless to say, there was loud cheering at every bit of good news, booing at the bad.
