Management in business and organizations is the function that coordinates the efforts of people to accomplish goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively. Management comprises planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization to accomplish the goal. Resourcing encompasses the deployment and manipulation of human resources, financial resources, technological resources, and natural resources. Management is also an academic discipline, a social science whose objective is to study social organizations. Unlike other factors of production, human beings are willful and comparatively unpredictable. Their creative power is crucial to production but it can also be deployed to frustrate, and not just facilitate, what they are paid to do. The role of a manager in organizations is complex. While managers can come in different shapes and sizes they all share the task of utilizing people and resources to achieve organizational goals. This textbook equips students with the skills and practical understanding to meet the management challenges of a new century.
