How can we understand what we do not know? How can we comprehend what is outside our experience? God is holy; we are sinful. God is all-powerful and all-knowing and perfect love and we are not. He knows us completely, and it is the desire of his heart for his children to know him. The best teachers will patiently lead students one step at a time, using what students do know to increase their understanding of what they need to learn. God is the master teacher. God reveals himself to his children, in the Bible and in everyday experiences, using what they do understand to help them learn the truth about who he is. He takes what is familiar to them and says, At least in some ways, I AM like that. It is not enough to have knowledge of what God said; we must have understanding of what he wants us to learn. Examine thirteen metaphors God uses to describe himself and find deeper understanding of this God who wants you to know him.
